New Yam Festival is one of the greatest festivals in Igbo land.It is a period when Igbo people ,both at home and in the diaspora celebrate a successful farming season,and thank their Chi(God) for leading them through another successful farming season.

For Nnewi,it’s always a grand ceremony that is celebrated for four days.Nnewi people call the festival ‘Afia ọlụ’ in their own dialect.

Nnewi New Yam Festival Celebration(Afia-ọlụ),2022 has been amazing so far

Day 1

It all started on Wednesday ,the 24th of August at Okwu Edo in Uruagu,Nnewi where the four quarters of Nnewi converged to cut the new yam,thank the land and their Chi for a successful farming season, then declare the festival open.

Igwe of Nnewi ,His Royal Highness ,Igwe Kenneth Orizu was there to break the Kola with the three other Obi’s.
All the necessary rituals were performed.

After observing all the protocols preceeding the entertainment aspect of the occasion,the event was officially thrown into mesmerizing entertainments.

First to show off on the stage were different Nnewi Women Dance Groups.
They really did us proud as the aged ones among them were still having their energetic nature and dancing skills intact.

Their Children were so pleased to watch them, and they didn’t hesitate to spoil them by spraying wads of cash on them.

It was a moment everyone wished it never ended .

When the MC finally succeeded in begging our very impressive mothers to please allow other events to happen and they left the stage,the men took over.

It’s wrestling time !

Otolo was to take on Umudim ,and Uruagu on Nnewichi.

Umudim and Nnewichi emerged victorious and they will now take on each other during the closing ceremony of Nnewi New Yam Festival,2022 on Saturday the 27th ,to determine who goes home with the grand prize of ₦200,000.

The 2nd ,3rd and 4th positions will win ₦150,000 ,₦100,000 and ₦50,000 respectively .

It was not a day for masquerades,although very few masquerades were spotted .
Masquerades are slated to perform at the closing ceremony of the 27th .

Some Nigerian and international brands were also present at the Nnewi New Yam Festival, 2022 opening ceremony.
Guinness set the stage for the event. They also supported in many other ways.

Knor cube Knorr Nepal and some other brands were present too
