The Housing Struggle No One Prepares You For

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how hard it is for young people in Nigeria to find decent housing. It’s not even about luxury, just a clean, safe space to call your own. Rent is insanely high, especially in the cities, and salaries haven’t exactly caught up. It almost feels like a full-time hustle just to afford shelter.
You see people working hard, saving every naira, and still struggling to get a decent apartment. Some are forced to live far from work or school, others move in with friends or stay at home longer than they planned. And honestly, it’s not by choice – it’s survival.
What surprises me the most is how normal this struggle has become. We don’t even talk about it enough. Everyone’s just trying to cope. People are sharing one-room apartments, turning small spaces into livable homes, doing whatever they can to stay afloat. It’s admirable, but also tiring.
I know a lot of us are hopeful, waiting for something to change. Maybe better opportunities, maybe more affordable housing. Until then, we keep adjusting, keep managing, keep moving. But this shouldn’t be normal. We deserve better.
