The Story of Chioma Egodi Jnr || Standing Up for Consumer Rights Amid Personal Struggles
Chioma Egodi Jnr, also known as Chioma Okoli, is a businesswoman from Otolo, Nnewi. She became well-known across Nigeria after giving a review about a popular tomato product made by Erisco Foods.
In late 2023, Chioma posted her opinion on Facebook about Erisco Foods’ Nagiko Tomato Mix. She said the tomato mix tasted too sweet and wondered if the company was still maintaining its quality. Many people saw this as a normal product review. However, Erisco Foods didn’t like her comments. They accused her of spreading false information and harming their business reputation. Soon after, they took her to court.
Chioma was arrested in Lagos but the case was later moved to Abuja. She faced serious charges, including conspiracy and spreading false information online.
In May 2024, Chioma appeared in court in Abuja and she pleaded not guilty. The judge granted her bail and reminded everyone that she is innocent until proven guilty. Since then, the case has had many hearings and delays. Chioma’s lawyers asked to move the case back to Lagos but eventually agreed to keep it in Abuja. Now in May 2025, the case is still ongoing. There are talks about possibly settling the case outside court, but no final decision has been made public.
Chioma’s personal ordeal throughout the court case
While fighting this legal battle, Chioma was also going through a very difficult personal time. She recently shared an emotional post on Facebook about discovering she was pregnant during all the stress. She was overjoyed and saw the pregnancy as a special blessing despite her troubles.
Sadly, a later scan showed that her twins had no heartbeat. She wrote about how broken and drained she felt after hearing the news.
“I was broken and drained. The doctor told me I needed to let go of my babies. It was so hard.”
She underwent several medical procedures and thanked her friends who stayed by her side, giving her strength and support.
“I am still standing, still believing in God who is always faithful.”
Her courage and faith touched many people who admire her strength during such a painful time.
Chioma’s case has sparked a lot of conversation about the rights of consumers to speak honestly about products and how companies should respond to criticism. Many people support Chioma, saying everyone should be able to share their opinions without fear of legal trouble. This case could lead to changes in how Nigerian law treats online reviews and comments.
No one knows yet how the case will end. But Chioma’s bravery in speaking out and enduring personal pain has made her a symbol of hope and resilience. Many are watching closely, hoping for justice to be served.
