Fire Outbreak at Okofia as Physiology Department at the College of Health Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Burns to the ground.
On the evening of yesterday, The department of Physiology, under the faculty of Basic Medical Sciences located at the College of Health Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Nnewi Campus, Okofia caught a huge fire.
The fire spread rapidly and went out of hands that it couldn’t be controlled for a very long while. Students, lecturers and all present had to watch the fire gradually bring the building to ruins.
The cause of the fire is yet unconfirmed but sources said that it was a faulty AC that sparked and the light hit the work generator that also stays in front of the department which was on at the said time. It caused an explosion and the fire took off from there.
For hours after this light had begun, there was no fire service in sight after several calls and reaching out to them.
It was observed too that the school lacked enough fire extinguisher and water which they must have always taught in classes as a lab precaution for fire management.
The Physiology Department has come to complete ruins loosing a magnitude of important documents, Students results, academic records from the department and other departments, clearance forms, Project materials and facilities like there laboratory which was part of the building, office equipments ,generators, ACs etc.
In all of this, it’s worthwhile to thank God that no life was lost during the inferno.
This is a huge loss to the department, faculty, college and University at large as these losses would take years to recover.
The school SAG has released a statement regarding the situation at hand and went on to sympathise the department.
Quite a coincidence that this happened on same day, Unizik reinstated a new Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ikechebelu Joseph following the nullification of Prof. Bernard Odoh as the 7th Substantive VC.
The students hopefully prays the body in charge quickly looks into this case and see to getting a new structure to aid them get back to classroom as soon as possible.
