Guinness World Records (GWR) has officially recognized Nigerian chef Hilda Baci for setting a new world record with the largest serving of jollof rice. The confirmation came on Monday through GWR’s official X (formerly Twitter) page, putting an end to days of anticipation after her record-breaking cooking feat in Lagos.

The record, described as the “Largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice”, was achieved with a massive 8,780 kilograms (19,356 lb 9 oz) of the iconic West African dish. Hilda Baci, working in partnership with Gino, a leading food brand, prepared the historic meal during the Gino World Jollof Festival at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Thousands of people had gathered over the weekend to witness the extraordinary cooking, which involved a specially built giant pot and over four tonnes of rice, tomatoes, peppers, onions, and spices. The event combined food, music, and culture, turning the festival into a major celebration of Nigerian heritage.

After the cooking ended on September 12, there was a brief scare when the enormous pot partially collapsed during the weighing process. However, the technical team quickly resolved the issue, and the food was successfully measured before being shared with attendees and communities.

The distribution did not end at the festival ground. After the weighing on September 12, the food was shared with the public, and the process continued through the night into the morning of the 13th. Even by early afternoon, there was still more than enough to go around. To ensure no food went to waste, the organizers moved the pot to Gbagada on the Lagos mainland, where distribution continued and even more people got a taste of the record-breaking jollof rice.

The official announcement from Guinness World Records has now sealed Hilda Baci’s place in history. On X, the organization wrote:
“New record: Largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice – 8,780 kg (19,356 lb 9 oz) achieved by Hilda Baci and Gino in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.”

Government officials and cultural leaders have praised the achievement, calling it a moment of pride for Nigeria. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mallam Mohammed Idris, earlier described the feat as proof of how Nigerian cuisine can promote unity and showcase culture to the world.

Hilda, who previously gained international attention for her Guinness World Record in marathon cooking (cook-a-thon), said she was deeply grateful for the recognition and support. “This is not just about me, it’s about Nigeria and about showing the world how special our food and culture are,” she said.

The confirmation from Guinness adds to Hilda’s growing profile as one of Africa’s most influential culinary figures. It also highlights the global relevance of jollof rice, a dish long celebrated across West Africa but often linked with playful rivalries over which country makes it best.

With this recognition, Hilda Baci has written her name in history once again, proving that Nigerian chefs and cuisine can stand tall on the world stage.
