Meet Pope Leo XIV – The First American Pope
On May 8, 2025, the Catholic Church made history by choosing Robert Francis Prevost as the new pope. He is now called Pope Leo XIV, and he is the first American-born pope in the history of the Church.
Pope Leo XIV was born in Chicago, USA, in 1955, and he is now 69 years old. He belongs to the Augustinian Order, making him the first Augustinian pope in modern times.
Before becoming a bishop or cardinal, Pope Leo XIV was a very educated man. He studied mathematics and physics and even taught these subjects at the university level. He also studied theology and philosophy during his religious training. He earned degrees from both American and European schools and worked as a professor, missionary, and church leader. His deep knowledge in both science and religion made him respected by many people around the world.
Although he was born in the United States, Pope Leo XIV spent more than 20 years working in Peru, South America. He served as a missionary, priest, and later a bishop. He even became a citizen of Peru. His time in Latin America helped him understand different cultures, speak Spanish fluently, and connect with people from all walks of life.
His rise to the papacy happened very quickly. In less than 10 years, he went from being a bishop to archbishop, then cardinal, and finally pope. This shows how much trust and respect he gained in a short time.
Pope Leo XIV chose the name “Leo” in honor of Pope Leo XIII, who was known for supporting workers and fighting for social justice. This shows that the new pope wants to stand for fairness, peace, and helping the poor.
In his first speech, he said, “God loves us, God loves you all, and evil will not win.” These powerful words show that he wants to lead with love, hope, and strength.
Many people believe Pope Leo XIV will bring fresh ideas and unity to the Catholic Church. He is quiet, wise, and deeply spiritual, and the world is watching with hope as he begins his journey as the new leader of the Catholic Church.
