The Influence of Anglicanism in Nnewi’s History

Anglicanism has played an important role in the history of Nnewi. It was introduced by Christian missionaries from the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in the late 1800s, during the period when Christianity was spreading across Igboland. These missionaries came not just to preach the gospel but also to help in the areas of education and healthcare.

By the early 1900s, the Anglican Church had started building its presence in Nnewi. One of the first major churches established was St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Uruagu, which became a strong center of worship and Christian teaching. Another major church, St Mary’s Anglican Church in Umudim, also played a big role in spreading Christianity and community values.

One of the biggest contributions of the Anglican Church in Nnewi was education. The church opened some of the earliest mission schools, such as Bishop Uzodike Memorial School, which provided formal education to many young boys and girls. These schools started appearing between the 1920s and 1940s, helping to produce early educated elites in the town.

The Anglican Church also helped in the area of healthcare. In 1907, the CMS founded Iyienu Mission Hospital near Onitsha. Though outside Nnewi, it served people from Nnewi and surrounding communities. The hospital offered quality healthcare and also trained nurses and midwives, many of whom worked in Nnewi hospitals and clinics in later years.

From the 1930s to the 1960s, the Anglican Church in Nnewi continued to grow. Churches became places not only for worship but also for social gatherings, youth development and leadership training. The church taught morals, unity, respect and service to the community. Many members of the Anglican Church went on to become successful traders, doctors, teachers, and leaders in Nnewi.

Today, the Anglican Church remains very active in Nnewi. It continues to guide the people spiritually, support schools, organize youth programs and contribute to the growth of the community.
