Early Life and Background

Obiora Okonkwo was born on December 5, 1965, in Gombe, a town in the northeastern part of Nigeria. Though born in the north, he is originally from Ogidi, a town in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, in southeastern Nigeria. He grew up during a time of political and economic change, which shaped his worldview from an early age.

As a child, he helped his parents in their trading business. This gave him early exposure to business life and helped him develop important skills like customer service, bargaining, and honesty. Many people in Onitsha and other parts of Igboland know this method as the Igbo apprenticeship system”igba boi”, where young people learn business by working with experienced traders. This experience stayed with him throughout his life.

Education

Obiora Okonkwo is highly educated and believes strongly in the power of learning. After his early education in Nigeria, he traveled abroad for further studies.

Academic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Management – Studied in Russia
  • Master’s Degree in Economics – Completed in Russia
  • PhD in Political Science – Graduated with distinction from the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow

He is one of the few Nigerian entrepreneurs who also have strong academic records. He speaks English, Russian, and Igbo fluently and continues to promote education wherever he goes.

Professor of Practice

In 2022, Obiora Okonkwo was appointed a Visiting Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka. His role is to teach students how to combine theory with real business practices, based on his own life experiences. This position shows the respect he has earned in both the academic and business worlds.

The Dome

In 2005, Obiora Okonkwo founded The Dome Entertainment Centre in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. At the time, Abuja didn’t have many options for entertainment, leisure, or nightlife. He saw this gap and decided to fill it.

What is The Dome?

The Dome is a multi-purpose entertainment center that includes:

  • A luxury boutique hotel
  • A restaurant with local and international meals
  • A gym and wellness center
  • A 24-hour bowling alley (one of the first in Nigeria)
  • A nightclub and rooftop lounge called Vertigo
  • An event hall for weddings, concerts, and conferences

The Dome became a favorite spot for diplomats, business people, celebrities, and families. It also created hundreds of jobs and contributed to tourism in Abuja.

United Nigeria Airlines

In 2021, Obiora Okonkwo launched a new airline called United Nigeria Airlines (UNA). His goal was to connect more Nigerian cities and make air travel affordable and reliable for everyone, especially in the South-East.

Why United Nigeria Airlines is Special

  1. It offers flights to less popular cities like Enugu, Owerri, Asaba, and Warri, not just Lagos or Abuja.
  2. The airline focuses on safety, comfort, and punctuality.
  3. It has helped to promote local tourism and business by making travel easier.
  4. It has given jobs to many Nigerian pilots, engineers, and flight staff.

In a country where airline services are often expensive and unreliable, United Nigeria Airlines is working hard to improve the aviation experience. Dr. Okonkwo also speaks up regularly about the challenges of running a local airline and calls for better support from the government.
