Imo State Governor Hosts Super Falcons’ Homegrown Stars in Abuja
“You made Imo and Nigeria proud,” Uzodimma tells players as he gifts each $25,000

In a heartwarming tribute to excellence, patriotism, and homegrown brilliance, Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, hosted seven Imo-born Super Falcons players in Abuja following their historic victory at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The private reception, which held at the Imo Governor’s Lodge in Abuja on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, was attended by close aides, sports officials, and supporters of the Super Falcons. The Governor commended the players not only for their role in lifting Nigeria to a record-extending 12th WAFCON title but for making Imo State proud on the continental stage.
The Imo stars honoured at the event were Chiamaka Nnadozie, Osinachi Ohale, Tochukwu Oluehi, Jennifer Echegini, Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Anam Imo all key figures in Nigeria’s campaign, which ended in a dramatic 3–2 final win over host nation Morocco.
In recognition of their achievement, Governor Uzodimma gifted each of the seven players the sum of $25,000, a gesture that received applause across the sports community.
“These young women have brought us glory. Their story is a testimony of discipline, training, and patriotic commitment to Nigeria. As their governor, I’m proud to honour them,” Uzodimma said during the ceremony.
He encouraged young girls across Imo State and Nigeria to look up to these women as examples of what is possible when talent meets hard work and opportunity.
A Worthy Celebration of Imo Talent
The event was filled with emotion, as the players took turns thanking the Governor for his support, sharing memories of their journey to the top, and expressing hope for increased investment in female football across Nigeria.
Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Falcons’ goalkeeper and captain, expressed deep appreciation on behalf of the players.
“We are grateful for this recognition. This will push us to do even more,” she said.
The players also received commemorative plaques and personalized medals from the Imo State Government as tokens of honour.
The Imo Spirit Shines Bright
Governor Uzodimma reiterated that his administration will continue to support sports development in the state and promised that the success of the Falcons will translate into more structured investment in grassroots football, especially among young girls.
He ended the event with a photo session and a charge to the players
“The next generation is watching. Keep flying the Imo and Nigerian flags high.”
