Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye: The Nigerian Surgeon Who Made Global History With Fetal Surgery
In the world of medicine, some stories stand out not just because of science, but because of the courage, skill, and inspiration behind them. One such story is that of Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, a Nigerian-born pediatric surgeon who stunned the world when he and his team performed a surgery that seemed almost impossible.
At just 23 weeks of pregnancy, a baby diagnosed with a dangerous tumor was partially delivered from the womb. The doctors removed the tumor and carefully placed the baby back inside the mother’s womb, where she continued to grow until birth. This incredible operation, carried out at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, USA, became a global medical milestone and at the center of it was Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye.

ToggleThe Baby Who Was Born Twice
The patient was a baby girl named Lynlee Hope. Before birth, doctors discovered she had a sacrococcygeal teratoma, a rare tumor that grows at the base of the spine. Left untreated, the tumor would have taken her life before she even had a chance to be born.
The only hope was an extremely delicate procedure known as fetal surgery. At just 23 weeks, Dr. Olutoye and his team carried out the operation. They opened the mother’s womb, carefully brought part of the baby’s body outside, and removed the tumor. Afterward, they returned the baby into the womb and closed it back.
For the next several weeks, Lynlee continued to grow safely inside her mother until she was delivered again by C-section at 36 weeks, this time as a healthy baby.
The world called her the “baby who was born twice.”
