Favour Ofili’s From Nigeria Breaks World Record in Atlanta, America
Nigerian track star Favour Ofili once again proved her status as a world-class athlete by breaking the African women’s 150m record at the Adidas Atlanta City Games held on Saturday, May 17, 2025. The event took place in the heart of Atlanta’s Piedmont Park, where top international athletes gathered to compete in one of the most exciting street athletics meets on the calendar.
Ofili blazed through the 150m straight race in an astonishing time of 15.85 seconds, surpassing the previous African record of 16.30 seconds, a mark she herself had set at the same event in 2024. With this performance, she not only smashed her continental record but also became the first woman to run under 16 seconds in this distance since Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo’s 16.23s run in 2018.
Born on December 31, 2002, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, Favour Ofili has been a rising star in the world of athletics. She first gained attention as a teenager and quickly rose through the ranks to represent Nigeria on the world stage. A former standout at Louisiana State University (LSU), Ofili graduated with a degree in Sport and Fitness Administration and has since turned professional, continuing to build her career with remarkable consistency and speed.
Over the years, she has established herself as a record-breaking sprinter. Ofili holds the Nigerian national record in the 200m (21.96 seconds) and the African indoor record in the same distance (22.11 seconds). She also holds the African and national record in the women’s 300m, with a time of 35.99 seconds.
Her record-breaking run in Atlanta is the latest in a series of strong performances that have positioned her among the fastest women in the world. In a field that included some of the best athletes from around the globe, Ofili’s dominant run was a reminder of her readiness for even greater challenges ahead — including the upcoming World Championships and Olympic Games.
Favour Ofili continues to inspire a new generation of Nigerian and African athletes. Her dedication, resilience, and remarkable talent reflect not only personal excellence but also the rising potential of African women in global sports. With each race, she writes a new chapter in the history of athletics and carries the hopes of a continent with her.
Congratulations to Favour Ofili on her historic performance in Atlanta! The world is watching, and Nigeria is proud.
