Fish Magnet 2025: Emotional Candlelight Procession Begins in Awka

Anambra Entrepreneur Ifesinachi Onyekere, Popularly known as Fish Magnet to Be Honoured as Anambra Awaits Candlelight Tribute
This evening in Awka, a quiet but heavy mood fills the air. Streets are busy as usual, but hearts are elsewhere. The people of Anambra are waiting to honour a young man whose life and death shook the community. Ifesinachi Onyekere, popularly known as Fish Magnet, is set to be remembered today through a candlelight procession and wake, but as of now, the event is yet to begin.
The anticipation is strong.
Who Was Fish Magnet?
More than just a fish seller, Fish Magnet was an employer, a peacemaker, and a community man. From his base in Awka, he provided jobs and fresh food, helping to keep fish affordable for low-income families. He was a believer in building wealth the right way and he proved it was possible.
But on July 27, 2025, that dream was cut short. Gunmen stormed his home in Okpuno, shot him in the leg, and abducted him. Despite a ransom payment, his lifeless body was later discovered in Amawbia.
Since then, Anambra has not been the same.

Today: A State of Waiting

The candlelight procession is scheduled to begin today, August 5, at 3:00 PM, with the gathering point set at Aroma Junction in Awka. From there, mourners will walk to Fish Magnet’s business outlet at Ring Road, Agu‑Awka.
As the clock approaches 3:00 PM, the procession is yet to begin, but preparations are visibly underway. Locals, activists, and sympathizers are getting ready, some making their way to the venue, others sharing black-themed photos and tributes on social media in silent anticipation.
Social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) is also expected to lead the march, having flown into Anambra earlier to lend his voice and presence to the movement.
A Wake for Justice
This isn’t just a candlelight walk. It’s a symbol of protest, a plea for justice, and a reminder that no one who lives to help others should die in fear.
Though the event is delayed, the silence of the moment speaks loudly. The people are ready. And even in this pause, the purpose remains to remember a life cut short and to demand peace in our towns.

Anambra Government Reaction
The Anambra State Government has condemned the killing and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. A formal investigation is reportedly underway, but the people want more than promises, they want action. They want security. They want to stop losing their brightest to bullets and betrayal.
As the sun begins to set on Awka, candles will soon light the path of memory, pain, and purpose. Rest in peace, Fish Magnet. Your light has not gone out.
