Tension in Onitsha as OCHA Brigade Allegedly Shoots Traders

The incident reportedly occurred along Bright Street, opposite First Bank, during an enforcement exercise where OCHA Brigade officials attempted to seize goods. Eyewitnesses said traders resisted the operation, leading to a violent clash that ended with gunshots.
At least four people were hit by bullets, including a pregnant woman. The shooting sparked panic across the busy commercial hub, forcing traders to shut down shops and flee for safety. Videos and photos of the incident quickly circulated on social media, amplifying the tension in the city.
The OCHA Brigade, a task force established by Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration to enforce order in markets and public spaces, has been previously criticized for alleged high-handedness in carrying out operations. This latest incident has renewed calls for accountability and reform in how the agency interacts with civilians.
As at the time of writing, the Anambra State Government has not issued an official statement on the matter. Civil society groups and market associations are expected to press for investigations into the incident and justice for the victims.
The situation remains tense in Onitsha, with fears of reprisal protests or further clashes if the matter is not swiftly addressed.
