The Origins of the Nnewi Kingship System||Culture and Traditions

Nnewi is a town in Anambra State, Nigeria, known for its business strength and rich culture. One of the most important parts of Nnewi’s history is its kingship system. Unlike many other Igbo towns that have no central king, Nnewi has had a king for many years. This system of kingship started long before the arrival of the British and continues today.

Nnewi is made up of four main parts called quarters. These quarters are Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim, and Nnewichi. Each of these quarters has a traditional ruler called an Obi. But the Obi of Otolo is the most powerful. He is also known as the Obi of Nnewi. This means he is the main king of the whole Nnewi town.

The kingship in Nnewi started with a man named Mmaku. He is believed to be the founder of the Nnewi royal family. His descendants became rulers, and the kingship has been passed down through the same royal family for many generations. The royal family of Nnewi is known as the Nnofo family in Otolo.

The king is not chosen by election like a politician. He is born into the royal family. When a king dies, his son or another male relative from the royal family is chosen to become the next Obi. Before this happens, the elders and priests in the community must perform traditional rites and consult the ancestors to approve the new king. The process is done with great care and respect for tradition.

The Obi of Nnewi is a very important figure. He leads the people in culture, tradition, and community matters. He plays a major role in festivals like Igu Aro, which marks the Nnewi New Year, and Afiaolu, the Yam Festival. The Obi is also responsible for settling disputes, guiding the town, and keeping peace among the people.

Today, the current Obi of Nnewi is Igwe Kenneth Orizu III. He became king in 1963 and is the 20th Obi of Nnewi. He is one of the longest-ruling kings in Nigeria. Under his leadership, Nnewi has become a town known for industry, unity, and development.

The other three Obis from Uruagu, Umudim, and Nnewichi are also important. They take care of their own quarters and work together with the Obi of Nnewi for the good of the entire town. Each Obi helps to keep the customs, traditions, and values of the people alive.

The kingship system in Nnewi shows that the town has a strong and organized way of life. It reminds the people of their roots and helps them stay united. Even with modern changes, the Obi remains a respected and guiding figure in Nnewi today.
