Is Struggling To Have A Male Child In Igboland Still Worth It?

It’s perplexing that a modern Igbo man will give birth to about three sons, when they grow up, none will be living with him or wish to continue with the family business.

Well, I totally understand the part of not continuing with the business your parents plied to train you. However, what I find hard to get is, why are many parents now living a lonely life after their children have all grown up?

This is totally against the Igbo daily prayer; anyị zucha ụmụ anyị, ụmụ anyị azuo anyị. The very wish of our forebears was for them to grow old surrounded and aided by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. However, the pattern of modern life has made this noble wish elusive.

Phyno some weeks back stated in a Radio interview that it is inconceivable to put his parents in elderly care home. Many supported him. But the reality of modern life shows that in few years to come, Home for the Elderly will be inevitable in Ala Igbo. Why? The idea of a son living with his parents is fast becoming anachronistic. It’s all the more difficult when the son gets married.

In fact, some parents even encourage all their children to leave them and pursue greener pastures. This is a shame when you consider that our ancestors who understood the value of having your children around you consolidated this belief with names like Nwaka, Nwakaego.

Today, our lifestyle, career choices, decisions in respect to our parents upkeep shows Egokanwa, Egoka, Egobuzo! Shame!

It’s shameful for parents in their dying days to live as if they have no male children. Yet, these male children will lay claim to whatever inheritance they left behind in total exclusion of daughters who now primarily take care of parents.

Suffice to say, it is now more profitable to have daughters than sons! If this is true, then we may need to review and overhaul Igbo customs in respect to inheritance. Monkey no fit dey work make Baboon go dey chop!
