Afiaolu Nnewi Festival 2025, Day Three: Umudim Celebrates with Dance, Masquerades, and Homage
Day Three of the Afiaolu Festival 2025 in Nnewi, held at the palace grounds of the Obi of Umudim, carried forward the grandeur of this year’s celebration with its own distinct flavor. Following the modest gathering at Otolo on Day One and the colorful Uruagu spectacle on Day Two, the Umudim edition on Friday, 29th August 2024, brought tradition, dance, and community homage to the spotlight.
The festivities began with the Obi of Umudim breaking the kola nut, blessing the land, and offering prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity. The symbolic sharing of new yam with traditional sauce followed, an age-old ritual that marked the formal opening of Umudim’s day. This gesture underscored the heart of the festival: thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest and the reaffirmation of communal bonds.

From that moment, the palace grounds came alive. The arena filled with dignitaries, chiefs, political leaders, and families, all eager to take part in the cultural showcase. One after another, communities, groups, and families stepped forward to present homage to the Obi, offering drinks of different kinds, cartons of beer and wine, monetary gifts, and symbolic items of respect. These acts of homage highlighted the strong ties between the people and their traditional ruler.
