Afiaolu Festival 2025, Day Two: Uruagu Shines with Culture, Masquerades, and Dignitaries
Day Two of the Afiaolu Festival 2025 in Nnewi, held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, lived up to its reputation as one of the most colorful cultural displays in Anambra State. While Day One at Otolo provided a modest introduction to this year’s celebration, the Uruagu edition raised the bar with a breathtaking showcase of tradition, music, and masquerades. Many attendees agreed that the event not only met expectations but surpassed them.
The ceremony took place at the newly renovated Uruagu Hall, right inside the Obi of Uruagu’s palace, a venue that has become a rallying point for cultural preservation in the community. The hall, which benefitted from the support of billionaire businessman Chief Cletus Ibeto, provided a fitting stage for the grandeur that unfolded.

The day’s proceedings officially began with the breaking of the kola nut by His Royal Highness, Obi Afam Obi (Ogidi IV), the Obi of Uruagu. His prayers and blessings set the tone for the rest of the celebration, as tradition demands.
From there, the arena came alive. The field was awash with colors as masquerades of all types filled the stage. The revered Ijele masquerade, a towering symbol of Igbo identity, made a majestic appearance to loud applause. The feared and respected Ajofia masquerade also thrilled the crowd with its mysterious aura. Also present was the Asian masquerade and wonder masquerade. Alongside them were countless other masquerades, dancers, and cultural groups, each presenting their art in a way that kept the audience glued.
