Phyno: The Indigenous Rap King of the East
Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, widely known as Phyno, is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer who has remained one of the most respected and consistent voices in African hip-hop. Born on October 9, 1986, in Enugu State, Phyno is originally from Anambra State. He rose to prominence for his unique ability to rap fluently in the Igbo language, blending it seamlessly with Pidgin and English to create a distinct sound that resonates deeply with fans across Nigeria and beyond.
Phyno’s journey into music began long before he picked up the microphone. He started off as a record producer in 2003, working behind the scenes for several artists. With time, his passion for rapping took over, and he transitioned into performing. His early works quickly gained attention, particularly with the release of “Ghost Mode” featuring Olamide in 2012. The song was a major hit and won the Best Collaboration award at both The Headies and the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. This collaboration marked the beginning of a strong musical bond between Phyno and Olamide, leading to multiple joint projects over the years.
In 2014, Phyno released his debut album, No Guts No Glory, which featured successful singles like “Man of the Year,” “Parcel,” and “Alobam.” The album was praised for its originality, depth, and cultural relevance. Phyno stood out as an artist who was proud of his roots, choosing to rap in his native Igbo despite the pressure to conform to more commercial sounds. Over the years, he has stayed true to his identity, using his music to promote Igbo culture while also addressing issues affecting the everyday Nigerian.
Phyno has worked with some of the biggest names in the African music industry, including Flavour, Burna Boy, Timaya, Davido, and of course, Olamide. His collaborative spirit and lyrical strength have earned him respect across the continent. Albums like The Playmaker, Deal With It, and Something to Live For have solidified his position as one of the most influential artists in Nigeria.
In recent times, Phyno continues to evolve while staying rooted in his style. In 2024, he released his fifth studio album, Full Time Job, which blends rap, highlife, R&B, and gospel, featuring guest appearances from artists like Burna Boy, Flavour, and Johnny Drille.
In 2025, Phyno teamed up with Tanzanian music star Jux (Juma Jux) on a song titled God Design, a smooth blend of Afrobeat and Bongo Flava. The track showcases Phyno’s versatility, as he effortlessly rides the melodious beat with his signature flow, while Jux delivers a catchy hook in Swahili. God Design has been well received, further expanding Phyno’s influence in East Africa and proving that language is no barrier when it comes to good music.
Despite the rapidly changing Nigerian music scene, Phyno has remained relevant and consistent. His ability to adapt without losing his identity sets him apart. More than just a rapper, Phyno is a cultural ambassador, a symbol of pride for the Igbo people, and a testament to the power of staying true to oneself in an industry driven by trends. As he continues to release new music and tour internationally, Phyno remains an iconic figure in African music.
