THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF AFRICAN CHILD AT  IGWE NNEWI PALACE AND NNEWI MUSEUM.

The International day of African Child was organized and celebrated for the school children of Nnewi city by NAPPS (National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools), Nnewi Chapter. The Internationally recognized date for the Day of African Child is on the 16th of June, every year but it was celebrated on the 14th of June,2024 being Friday to be able to organize and effectively bring the kids together.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On the International Day of the African Child, the environs of Nnewi Museum and Igwe Nnewi Palace came alive with the vibrant energy of young minds from sixteen schools in attendance namely: Gloria School Nnewi, Floral International School, Kentina International School, Prudent Tutors International School Nnewi, Holy Innocent nur/pri School, Nnewi, Justice International School, the throne of grace nur/pri School, Danial Foundation nur/pri School, Summit International School, De Royal Crystal Mind School, Ihiala, Friend of Friends School Akammili, Nnewi, Jesus the way School, Great Choice School, Lofty Vision School, Zion Kids, If Not Jesus School.

The event was a celebration of African culture, creativity, and talent, showcasing the potential of the continent’s future leaders, so all the children were dressed in their cultural attires and adorned in beautifully curated traditional beads.

As the students from Gloria School, Floral International School, Kentina International School, and others arrived, their excitement was palpable. They eagerly embarked on a museum tour, discovering the rich history and heritage of Nnewi and Africa at Large. The kids of different schools took pictures within and around the museum facilities with several sculpted pieces that filled the museum surroundings. They were so fascinated with all they saw in and outside the museum.

The tour was followed by the next itinerary of events that continued at the Igwe Palace. HRH Igwe Kenneth Orizu III, the oldest and the longest serving monarch in Nigeria, was called upon to offer opening prayers towards the event and break Kolanut. After which Introduction of the Chairman of the occasion and special guests, were made. Opening remarks was given by the Chairman of the occasion, Arch. Sam Onweluzo.

A keynote speech was presented in Igbo Language on: “Empowering African Children; Education, Equality and Opportunity”, by Mr. Chukwumaife Caleb Festus Okeke-Enyobi; The Director, Nnewi Museum and Proprietor Friend of Friends Schools.

Afterwards there was uninterrupted presentation by almost all schools in attendance. Presentations were set in motion by a drama performance by a school, that highlighted the challenges and triumphs of African children.

The cultural dance competition was a highlight of the event, with each school showcasing their unique traditional dances. The audience was mesmerized by the colorful costumes, rhythmic beats, and graceful movements. The competition was fierce, but in the end, winners were announced and awards were presented.

But that was not all! The students also engaged in a thrilling local wrestling competition, showcasing their strength and agility. The crowd cheered as the young wrestlers demonstrated their skills, and the winners were awarded prizes.

Also, the students participated in a Proverbs competition, showcasing their knowledge of African wisdom and folklore. The event was a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of Africa, and the students were eager to share their knowledge and learn from each other.

Throughout the day, the students engaged in various activities, learning about their shared African heritage and the importance of celebrating their identity.

Towards the end, prizes were awarded by the Crowned Price of Nnewi, Prince Obianaefo Orizu (Obinaechendo Nnewi), Prince Afam Orizu, Chairman of the museum committee and Mr. Ben Orizu, Chairman of NAPPS, to the winners from the different competitions displayed. The event was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on the young participants.

 

 

 

As the day drew to a close, the students departed with big smiles, new friends, and a renewed sense of pride in their African roots. The Nnewi Museum had once again proven to be a hub of cultural exchange, education, and inspiration. The International Day of the African Child was indeed a celebration to remember!
