Edo Nnewi Celebrates New Yam Festival 2025 with Thanksgiving and Masquerades
On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Okwu Edo in Agbọ Edo, located beside the Agbọ Edo New Motor Spare Parts Market along Bank Road, came alive with the vibrant energy of the Edo Nnewi New Yam Festival. Organized by the Edo Chief Priest (Isi Edo Nnewi), the event attracted a massive turnout of people from Nnewi and beyond who came to give thanks to Edo for the blessings of the past year and to make personal prayer requests for guidance, prosperity, and protection.

The Edo Nnewi New Yam Festival is held for Edo and her worshippers, and it is a time of thanksgiving and renewal when people celebrate the new yam harvest in honor of the deity. It is both a spiritual and cultural moment, where gratitude for past blessings is expressed and hopes for the future are laid before Edo. The festival stands as one of the most significant gatherings in Nnewi, blending reverence for tradition with the joy of harvest celebration.
People arrived with carefully prepared offerings that included yam, cow, goat, fowl, nzu (white chalk), edo, hot drinks, and ọjị (kolanut). Some also included money as part of their gifts to the deity, reflecting their deep gratitude and desire for continued favor. The festival was not only a spiritual gathering but also a cultural celebration, with several masquerade displays thrilling the crowd, alongside highlife performers who entertained the audience and added rhythm and excitement to the proceedings.
